Kenneth S. Hunt was born on August 7, 1956, in Fern Tree Gully, Victoria, and has spent his life living and working in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne. Growing up surrounded by nature and a strong sense of community, he developed an early love for art in his teenage years that would remain with him throughout his life.

His passion was first inspired by his father, whose own painting practice introduced Ken to the creative process. Through observing his father and his father’s mentors, Ambrose Griffin and Justus Jorgensen, Ken gained his earliest understanding of painting. From the age of 17, he continued to develop his skills independently, becoming entirely self-taught through decades of patience, practice, and quiet dedication.

While committed to his art, Ken also balanced family life and work. He met his wife Helen in 1979, and they married in 1982, later raising two daughters, Rachel and Jessica. Throughout these years, painting remained a constant presence, often taking place late at night or on weekends while he built a working life across various trades and family businesses.

In 1994, Ken and Helen purchased Monbulk Jewellers, a much-loved local business that they continue to operate today. The store includes a dedicated gallery space where Ken’s artwork has been on permanent rotating display since its opening. From his home studio in the Dandenong Ranges, he continues to paint regularly, steadily refining his craft across more than five decades.

Working primarily in oil on canvas, along with detailed pencil drawings, Ken is known for capturing atmosphere, character and realism. His subjects range from sweeping landscapes and golf courses to deeply personal portraits, each created with care, patience and a strong sense of place.

Recognition and Exhibitions
Over the years, Ken has quietly built a respected presence through art societies, exhibitions and national portrait competitions. He was a member of the Sherbrooke Art Society from 1980–1990 and rejoined in 2011, and has exhibited in a number of local art shows including the Belgrave Art Show, Camberwell Rotary Art Show and Preston Rotary Art Show.

Ken has regularly entered both the Archibald Prize and the Doug Moran Portrait Prize between 2000 and 2019. He was selected as a finalist in the Doug Moran Portrait Prize in 2006 for his painting “The Sergeant and the Major – Alan Fincher.” His portrait work has also been featured multiple times in The Hidden Faces of the Archibald (Victoria’s Salon des Refusés), with works exhibited across Melbourne at venues including Crown Towers, Park Hyatt, Hilton on the Wharf and Pan Pacific Hotel between 2007 and 2019. Since 1994, his paintings have been on permanent rotating exhibition at Monbulk Jewellers.
